About Colonia

Feature Film, 65 mins, 2019.

Following up his much lauded 2015 short GUAO (an official selection for over 20 film festivals around the world)  Dominican American artist/filmmaker, Eduardo Velázquez, is in post-production for his debut feature length film.

About Colonia is the story of Colonia, a nineteen-year-old nursing student who lives in a tiny apartment in Brooklyn with her eccentric and religiously conservative single mother, Lucia.  Lucia has only one wish for her daughter; that she marry a soldier and put herself on the stable path to a pension and the American Dream. As a first generation immigrant from the Caribbean raised in New York City, Colonia yearns for more, yet her aspirations are tested by an increasingly intimate connection with the sacred spiritual world of Santeria.

Circumstance and choice, isolation and interdependence, converge in a story of a young millennial, who is caught between two islands that are an ocean and a world apart.
